- As you might have guessed, not all ladybugs are and the boys among them are also called ladybugs. Confusing but true.
- Ladybugs acquired their name during a severe insect infestation on crops that were all but completely destroyed in the Middle Ages. Catholic farmers begged for the Virgin Mary’s intervention and soon little red and black bugs appeared and saved the day. These bugs were called “The Beetles of Our Lady” and eventually their name was shortened to “Lady Bettles” and then to “Lady Bugs.”
- The bright colors on ladybug wings (red, yellow and black) are there for their own protection because these colors warn predators that this may be poisonous or bad tasting.
- Lady bugs can also protect themselves by pretending to be dead. They pull their legs up like turtles and release some blood that emits a smell that deters predators from approaching.
